- Fernando Torres: Croatian defender Šime Vrsaljko and Atletico Madrid teammate Gabi may have saved the life of Fernando Torres on Thursday night. The Atletico striker took a dive in the air and landed straight on his ear, causing him to choke on his tongue. The Sun reported. Vrsaljko and Gabi ran over quickly to operate and make sure Torres could breathe. Doctors say that this was the perfect response to the situation and that Torres’s life could very well have been safe.
2. Petr Čech: Čech underwent surgery for severe skull fractures. Initially unaware of the seriousness of the crash, the doctors later confirmed that it nearly cost Čech his life and that he suffered serious headaches because of the accident. Chelsea won a 1-0 draw.
3. John Terry: He nearly died in the 2007 Carling Cup final between Chelsea and Arsenal when Abou Diaby was accidentally kicked in the face. The defender was struck unconscious and swallowed his tongue, but was immediately assisted by Arsenal and England physio, Gary Lewin.
4. Oleg Gusev: Oleg Gusev, 30, was knocked unconscious after vying for a cross with Dnipro goalkeeper Denys Boyko during the Ukrainian Premier League match in Dnipropetrovsk. He received a blow to his jaw from Boyko’s foot, causing him to crash to the ground with a severe risk of swallowing his tongue.
