Cricket World Cup 1983 Stories – Part 1

1975 Windies dominated the entire tournament under Clive Lloyd’s captain. The 333 runs of Turner and the 11 wickets of Gary Gilmour could not prevent Windies’s World Cup bid. Windies won all three games in a group where Sri Lanka and Pakistan beat Australia before reaching the half-final finals. They faced and won New Zealand by five wickets in semi-finals. In the last matches, Captain Clive Lloyd faced Australia, scored 102 runs in 35 balls, and 291 runs in 60 runs and scored 274 in Australia.

During the 1979 World Cup, Windies’ domination persisted, and the Windies kept their international cup title. The tournaments remain undefeated and they beat England with a margin of 92 runs in the finals. In 1983, Windies again dominated, but they lost a match on the group stage for the first time in the history of the World Cup. India has hit Windies and provided the world with a new illustration. India will subsequently compete for the first semi-final. India won at this stage a one-size-fits-all East Africa game before 1983. In a comeback match, India lost to Australia and the Windies. They must victory over Zimbabwe now.

India lost 5 wickets for 17 runs. The captain Kapil take the charge with Syed kirmani and he alone scored 175 not out and take the score to 266 and defend it well. In semifinals, India faced England where England set the target of 213 runs in 60 words which were unchaseable at that time. But Yashpal Sharma, M. Amarnath, and SM Patil had other plans, they chase the target in 55 overs and India reached to finals for the first time in World Cup history. India was facing Windies in finals and everyone thought Windies will lift the trophy for the third time. The early wicket of Gavaskar fades all the hopes. With Srikanth knock India able to reach 183 which was not even per score to defend against a strong batting line up of Windies.

India needs some magic, and the magic happened. The magicians were Sandhu and Madan Lal who picked early wickets. But the problem was Vivian Richards, who was playing fearless and contributing to his team. A score of 57 Madan Lal balls took the wicket of Vivian Richards. Extraordinary run and catch at the mid-wicket by Kapil Dev change the momentum after which Windies could not settle for a while and all their wicket falls on the score of 140. India lifts the world cup for the very first time and changes the mindset of people around the world. India was known as an underdog before the world cup but now they set up a new pace.
